I read the following article on the Guido Fawkes blog: http://www.order-order.com/2008/11/not-nihilistic-realistic.html
Who decides what protest is legitimate? People like Blears' obviously see themselves as the final arbiters. This demonstrates their insatiable thirst for absolute power. Her comments are a frightening insight into the minds of our power crazed political elite who see themselves as our masters rather than our servants.
Cynicism and despair are the offspring of the modern political class; bloggers just bring this fact to the attention of the public. This angers the political elite who seem to want to subvert our freedoms. Cynicism and despair is produced by politicians who do not care about the needs of the people. Blogs are a source of hope at a time when politicians seek to break the will of the people through the medium of managed news. The truth hurts them when they try to use their media monopoly to make people believe that the negative changes that they want to bring about are both inevitable and necessary.
Blears' comment suggests blogs are in fact winning the battle to awaken minds. Perhaps they are worried that their stooges in the mainstream media will soon be out of work as people recognise their establishment bias.
Politicians do not like things that they cannot control. The blogosphere is an environment that they cannot subvert and Blears' is obliquely admitting to this fact. Her comments are in fact a victory for blogs and bloggers and show that her and her ilk are worried that the truth is getting out their despite their efforts.
In terms of adding value, I for one look forward to the day when politicians can begin to add value to our political culture. Somehow, I think that I am in for a very long wait indeed.
