Simon Hughes MP - Let's Pretend Politics, naïveté, And How We Are Desperate For Islam To Save Us!

Simon Hughes MP at GPU 2008, Saturday 25th OCT

I wonder what Mr Hughes thinks of the more Illiberal aspects of Islam, he seems to ignore those. What about women’s' rights, what about gay rights, what about inequality under Sharia law? Some liberal!

What is needed is a free and open debate about Islam, not meaningless platitudes from the likes of Hughes. What is needed is an end to illiberal initiatives such as censorship and heresy laws. Why is Hughes silent about the illiberal inequality of Sharia law? If Islam is what he suggests it is, then why can't the issues be discussed? Why can't Islam be criticised in the way that Christianity was criticised by Voltaire? How dare this man call himself a liberal!

The let’s pretend approach to politics is very dangerous and naive.
